Whilst Lyfta has been described as 'the best picture book in the world!', we do understand that some of the language and subtitles in Lyfta films can feel challenging for KS1 students. However, we know that many of the challenges can be navigated enabling younger students to learn lots with Lyfta too. Our community have shown that discussions and learning experiences around Lyfta are powerful in elevating knowledge and understanding of these focus areas at KS1. You can find a full list of case studies on champion schools, teachers, and trusts here.
The expectation at KS1 shouldn’t be to read and comprehend all of the subtitles, but to engage with the overarching themes of the storyworld through experiencing and interacting with the multisensory content. By doing this we can encourage students to share their thoughts and reflections about what they can see and hear as well as what they would like to know more about, unlocking important oracy opportunities in class.
Our advice is to lean into the multisensory and immersive elements of the storyworlds, to encourage interaction with what students are experiencing and support them in grasping the main points of the film (through play/pause or live translation) in order to facilitate meaningful, age-appropriate discussion. It is also vital to use the search filter to find KS1 appropriate lesson plans and collections.
To support in differentiating effectively, we have created a succinct ‘Lyfta at KS1 toolkit’ containing information on how to get the most out of Lyfta with your class, including:
✅ Activities to use for different elements of a storyworld
✅ A KS1 lesson walkthrough
✅ Our full ‘Lyfta at KS1’ webinar recording
✅ Links to KS1-specific content and lesson plans
Please note that there are a myriad of ways in which Lyfta can be adapted and used with young people, and these are just a small selection of examples. You know your students the best and should modify, adapt and differentiate any of these examples to meet the needs of your young learners.
